Answer key with explanations

  1. What is the slope of the line through (1, 2) and (4, 8)?

    Answer: 2. Rise = 8 − 2 = 6. Run = 4 − 1 = 3. Slope = 6 ÷ 3 = 2.

  2. What is the slope of the line through (−1, 4) and (3, −4)?

    Answer: −2. Rise = −4 − 4 = −8. Run = 3 − (−1) = 4. Slope = −8 ÷ 4 = −2.

  3. What is the slope of the line through (1, 5) and (7, 5)?

Answer: 0. Both points have y = 5, so the rise is 0. The line is horizontal and the slope is 0 ÷ 6 = 0.

  4. What is the slope of the line through (3, 2) and (3, 9)?

Answer: Undefined. Both points have x = 3, so the run is 0. Dividing by 0 is undefined. The line is vertical.

  5. A tank holds 20 gallons at 2 minutes and 50 gallons at 7 minutes. What is the rate of change?

    Answer: 6 gallons per minute. Slope = (50 − 20) ÷ (7 − 2) = 30 ÷ 5 = 6 gallons per minute.

  6. Leo found the slope through (1, 2) and (3, 8) and got (3 − 1) ÷ (8 − 2) = 1/3. What went wrong?

Answer: He put the run on top and the rise on the bottom.. Rise goes on top: (8 − 2) ÷ (3 − 1) = 6 ÷ 2 = 3. Leo calculated run ÷ rise, which is the reciprocal.
