One idea, many ways

Here is “Solving Two-Step Equations” explained four ways

🏫 School style

A two-step equation takes two moves to get the variable alone. The big idea: an equation is a balance. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. To solve, you undo what was done to the variable, starting with the last thing that happened to it.

💬 Plain English

Imagine a number puzzle: “I thought of a number, doubled it, added 3, and got 11. What was my number?”

📺 Scooby-Doo unmasking

In nearly every episode, the “monster” turns out to be a person in disguise. Imagine a villain who put on a costume first and a mask last. To unmask them, the mask comes off first, then the costume.

In 2x + 3 = 11, the +3 is the mask, put on last. Take it off first (subtract 3), then the ×2 (divide by 2), and the unknown is unmasked.

🧠 Memory trick

The gift wrapper

A gift is wrapped by putting it in a box first and tying the ribbon last. To open it, you do the reverse: ribbon off first, then the box. In 2x + 3, the multiply is the box and the +3 is the ribbon. Ribbon first, then box.

Questions

Is HighSchoolQ really free?

Yes. Every lesson, set of notes, memory trick, diagram and cheat sheet is free to read, no account needed. Free accounts add 50 extra practice questions and 2 hours of practice time every month. HighSchoolQ Plus is $9.99 a month for unlimited practice.

Who is it for?

High school students in the United States, grades 9 to 12. Lessons follow the Common Core, NGSS and C3 frameworks that most states use, so they match what your class is covering.

Why explain the same idea so many ways?

People get stuck for different reasons. A formal explanation works for some, a movie comparison or a joke works for others, and seeing an idea from several angles helps it stay in memory longer.

Are the lessons accurate?

Lessons are written with the help of AI, then every worked answer is re-solved by separate reviewers and automated checks before publishing. Each lesson shows its review status. If you spot a mistake, tell us and we fix it quickly.
