Answer key with explanations

  1. Solve 3x + 5 = 20.

    Answer: x = 5. Subtract 5 from both sides to get 3x = 15, then divide by 3 to get x = 5.

  2. Solve 7x − 9 = 19.

    Answer: x = 4. Add 9 to both sides to get 7x = 28, then divide by 7 to get x = 4.

  3. Solve x/6 − 2 = 1.

    Answer: x = 18. Add 2 to both sides to get x/6 = 3, then multiply both sides by 6 to get x = 18.

  4. Solve −4x + 6 = −10.

    Answer: x = 4. Subtract 6 to get −4x = −16, then divide both sides by −4 to get x = 4.

  5. A gym charges a 20-dollar sign-up fee plus 15 dollars per month. Alexa has paid 110 dollars in total. How many months has she been a member?

    Answer: 6 months. Write 15m + 20 = 110. Subtract 20 to get 15m = 90, then divide by 15 to get m = 6.

  6. The solution of 2x + 3 = 11 is x = 4. Which equation has the same solution?

    Answer: 2x = 8. Subtracting 3 from both sides of 2x + 3 = 11 gives 2x = 8, which is equivalent.

  7. Solve 3 = 2x − 5.

Answer: x = 4. Add 5 to both sides to get 8 = 2x, then divide by 2 to get x = 4. It is fine for the variable to be on the right: the same steps work.
