Slope-Intercept Form flashcards
Say the answer out loud before you flip. Cards you miss come back sooner; cards you know come back later. That spacing is what builds long-term memory.

Card 1
What are m and b in y = mx + b?
m is the slope (rise ÷ run). b is the y-intercept: the line crosses the y-axis at (0, b).
Card 2
Find the slope and y-intercept of y = x/4 − 9.
m = 1/4 and b = −9. The x term is (1/4)x, and the minus sign stays with the 9.
Card 3
What are the slope and y-intercept of y = 12?
m = 0 and b = 12. It is a horizontal line, because y = 0x + 12.
Card 4
Where does y = 0.5x + 10 cross the y-axis?
At (0, 10). Put x = 0 in the equation and you get y = 10.
Card 5
A line has slope 4 and passes through (1, 9). What is b?
Substitute: 9 = 4(1) + b, so b = 5 and the equation is y = 4x + 5.
Card 6
Write the equation of the line with slope 7 and y-intercept −1.
y = 7x − 1
Card 7
Write the equation of the line through (0, −2) and (3, 4).
The slope is (4 − (−2)) ÷ (3 − 0) = 2. The point (0, −2) gives b = −2. So y = 2x − 2.
Card 8
A candle is 20 centimeters tall and burns down at a steady 2.5 centimeters per hour. Write its height h after t hours. What does −2.5 mean?
h = −2.5t + 20. The slope −2.5 means the candle gets 2.5 centimeters shorter each hour. It only fits from t = 0 until the candle is gone at t = 8.
Card 9
Why can’t x = −3 be written as y = mx + b?
It is a vertical line with an undefined slope (the run is 0), so there is no number to use for m.
Card 10
How do you find b when you know the slope and one point?
Substitute the point’s x and y and the slope into y = mx + b, then solve for b. In symbols, b = y1 − m × x1.
Card 11
Rewrite y + 4x = 7 in slope-intercept form.
Subtract 4x from both sides: y = −4x + 7.
Card 12
In a story, what do the slope and the y-intercept usually tell you?
The slope is the rate of change (the “per” number). The y-intercept is the starting value, the value of y when x = 0.
